    Finally Writing My Own Blog

You know the saying about the cobbler's kids having no shoes or the IT guy whose own laptop is constantly crashing?

Well, in my case, I've written blogs for clients, past businesses, newsletters, websites, and even side projects, but never for my own Freelance Writers brand. I always had an excuse: too busy, too tired, or too focused on everyone else's projects.

And when the excuses finally ran out?

    Crickets. Silence.

A blank "Blog" page quietly judging me, like a to-do list with a smirk, reminding me that I could write for everyone else but hadn't shown up for myself.

So here we are with my very first blog for Freelance Writers.

(Cue the confetti cannons and awkward celebratory dance.)

I wanted this blog to be a little serious, a little funny, and hopefully encouraging enough to help anyone else sitting in front of a blank page wondering where to start. Let's be honest, blogging can feel intimidating even for professional writers.

So grab a coffee, a laptop, or even an old-fashioned pen and paper, and let's get started.

Here Are My Top 5 Recommendations for Writing Your First Blog

    1. Pick a Topic You Actually Care About

If it topic bores you, it will probably bore your readers too.

Start with something that interests you, makes you laugh, solves a problem, or answers a question your audience asks regularly. Some of the best blog content comes from real experiences and real conversations.

    2. Don't Overthink the "Perfect" Introduction

Your first sentence doesn't need to win a Pulitzer Prize.

    Just start writing.

Most great blog posts begin as rough drafts and get polished later. The important thing is to get your ideas onto the page.

    3. Write Like You're Talking to a Friend

Blogs aren't term papers. They're conversations.

Write the way you naturally speak. Keep your tone friendly, conversational, and easy to read. Pretend you're sitting across from someone having coffee and sharing an idea.

People connect with people, not perfect grammar.

    4. Keep It Simple

    Use:

    • Short paragraphs
    • Headings
    • Bullet points
    • Images
    • White space

Nobody enjoys scrolling through a giant wall of text. Make it easy for readers to find the information they're looking for and stay engaged with your content.

    5. Add a Call to Action (CTA)

Want people to comment, subscribe, share your article, or reach out about your services?

    Then ask.

Don't assume readers automatically know what you'd like them to do next. A simple call to action helps guide the conversation and gives your blog a purpose beyond simply being published.

    The Little Golden Nugget

Okay, I promised five tips, but I couldn't resist giving you one extra.

Before you publish, proofread your blog out loud.

Read it like it's someone else's article.

When you've read your own words ten times, your brain starts filling in missing words and correcting mistakes automatically. Reading out loud helps catch awkward sentences, typos, and areas where the writing doesn't flow as naturally as you thought.

    Even better?

Step away for a few hours and come back with fresh eyes.

Typos have a funny way of appearing five minutes after you hit publish.

Trust me on this one. I've been there.

One Small Update for Today's Writers

When I first wrote this article, AI writing tools were just beginning to find their way into everyday business.

Today, they can be incredibly helpful for brainstorming ideas, organizing content, creating outlines, and helping overcome writer's block.

    But here's the important part:

AI can help support your writing, but it shouldn't replace your voice.

Your experiences, stories, personality, and perspective are what make your content unique.

That's the part readers connect with.

    Final Thoughts

    And there you have it.

My very first blog written for my own Freelance Writers business instead of everyone else's.

So here's the truth. In the words of Nike, "Just Do It."

Your first blog doesn't need to be perfect.

It just needs to be written.

    Book time in your calendar.

    Write the post.

    Publish it.

Then start thinking about the next one.

    That's how blogs grow.

    That's how confidence grows.

And that's how your online voice begins to take shape.

👊 Simple, doable, and one step closer to building your online voice.
