Tips for a Blog Post

Finally Writing My Own Blog (Instead of Everyone Else’s!)

You know the saying about the cobbler’s kids having no shoes or the IT guy whose own laptop is constantly crashing?

Well, in my case, I’ve written blogs for clients, past businesses, and even side projects, but never for my own Freelance Writers brand. I always had an excuse: too busy, too tired, too focused on everyone else.

And when the excuses ran out? Crickets. Silence. A blank “Blog” page quietly judging me, like a to-do list with a smirk, reminding me that I could write for everyone else but hadn’t shown up for myself.

So here we are with my very first blog for Freelance Writers. (Cue the confetti cannons and awkward celebratory dance.)

I want this blog to be both a little comical and serious (because let’s be honest, blogging can feel intimidating even for pros) and encouraging enough to help anyone else who’s sitting in front of a blank page, wondering where to start, so just to grab a laptop or a pen and paper to begin the process.

Here are my Top 5 Recommendations to Remember When Writing Your First Blog:

1. Pick a Topic You Actually Care About

If it bores you, it will bore your readers. Start with something that lights you up, makes you laugh, or solves a real problem for your audience.

2. Don’t Overthink the “Perfect” Intro

Your first sentence doesn’t have to win a Pulitzer. Just start typing. Most great posts start clunky and get polished later. (Even this one started with “ummm…”).

3. Write Like You’re Talking to a Friend

Blogs aren’t term papers. Keep your voice natural, conversational, and easy to read. Pretend you’re having coffee with a friend.

4. Keep It Simple

Use short paragraphs, bullet points, and headings. Nobody likes scrolling through a wall of text. Make it easy for readers to grab your main ideas quickly.

5. Add a Call to Action - CTA

Want people to subscribe, comment, share, or reach out? You have to ask. Don’t assume they’ll know what to do after reading your blog.

*Okay, I said I had five suggestions for a blog, but I decided to give you what I call the “Little Golden Nugget”, that little bit of information that most people don’t do:

6. Proofread it OUTLOUD,

Like it’s someone else’s blog. When you’ve read your own words 10 times, your brain starts filling in the blanks. Then, step away, come back fresh, or better yet, have someone else read it. Typos and awkward sentences love to sneak in at the worst possible moment, like right after you hit publish. “Done that before!”

And there you have it. My very first blog written for my own Freelance Writers business instead of everyone else’s.

So, here’s the truth: In the words of Nike “JUST DO IT”! Your first blog doesn’t need to be perfect, it just needs to be written. The more you practice, the easier it gets. And, if you really want to make it happen, treat it like any other important appointment: book a date in your calendar to write it, and when to post it.
