AI and Me - the coach

Power Combination: AI and Me

The Power of Partnership

AI has opened an entirely new chapter in how we write and communicate content and digital data. It’s fast, efficient, and great at taking the heavy lifting out of research and creating the first drafts. When used correctly, it saves time, sparks creativity, and helps businesses share ideas faster than ever before.

The secret isn’t choosing between AI and humans, it’s learning how to combine both. AI can set the framework, but it’s the writer who turns information into connection and insight, keeping the message accurate, natural, and distinctly human. Together, they can make a powerful team.

The Power Duo: Working as a Team

After playing and coaching volleyball for over 45 years, I’ve learned that every great team wins with teamwork. To build a strong lineup, you need players in different power positions, like hitters, setters, and specialists, each bringing their own unique talent to the court.

The same goes for how I work with AI. We’re not opponents but teammates. Each of us has our strengths, and when we play to them, the result is authentic, polished, and powerful.

AI’s Superpowers

AI is that teammate who never tires out, never skips practice, and will continue to perform when asked to. It’s quick on its feet and brilliant under pressure.

My digital partner can:

  • Research vast amounts of data faster than I could skim one book: gathering facts and ideas in seconds.

  • Flag grammatical errors or structure issues instantly: a great first pass at suggested corrections.

  • Organize messy ideas into a clear structure: a great way to get your ideas organized.

  • Suggest SEO (Search Engine Optimization) tweaks: so the content finds its audience and

    helps content reach new readers.

In other words, AI sets the high ball, but the player still needs to spike the ball and get the point.

AI’s Weak Spots

Like any player, AI has its misread plays and does not put the ball in the right spot every time, and as any athlete knows, it still needs direction and coaching. It occasionally doesn’t set the ball high enough or set to the right player.

Here are its four biggest challenges and why human guidance matters:

  1. Accuracy: Sometimes it delivers with confidence but without truth.

  2. Context: It can miss subtleties, especially tone, emotion, or cultural understanding.

  3. Creativity: It can copy patterns but may reinvent them incorrectly.

  4. Consistency: It occasionally flips between formal and casual like a missed serve.

That’s where I step in as the writing coach, reading incoming information, calling the plays, and ensuring all content and gameplay are strategic and align with the team's strengths and game plan.

The Writer’s Superpowers

Years of playing and coaching taught me that great results come from awareness, feedback, and teamwork. A coach doesn’t just watch the game; they see the whole court, the opposition, and analyze every move of every play. They spot the missteps, adjust the plays, and help every player reach their potential.

That’s exactly what writers do with AI. We’re the coaches of communication and are ones who focus, step back, assess, and refine. AI may be quicker at gathering intel, but it still needs direction, strategy, and a steady hand to guide it to proper content and meaning.

Here’s how the writer’s superpowers keep the team in sync:

  • Creating new and Reliable Content: It is essential that as writers we continue to do new and original content and have our own voice out in the digital world.

AI duplicates information already out there, but our authentic voice needs to be represented. We as writers, check the content given by AI and make it our own.

  • Guiding the Content: Deciding and reviewing the topic, grammatical tone, and controlling what content goes into the articles.

  • Strategic Insight: Identifying when content veers off-message and realigning it with the brand’s goals.

  • Creative Programming: Taking AI’s raw data and turning it into storytelling that builds momentum, engagement and represents the client's or writer's voice.

  • Human Interface: Adding empathy, authenticity, and personality, as well as the emotional coding that turns information into connection.

Just like a coach, my job is to keep the rhythm steady, the direction clear, and the results strong. AI may bring the speed, but the writer brings the final strategies and together, we deliver the win.

Playing as One Team

In digital writing, success isn’t about choosing between AI technology and humans, it’s about what happens when both work in sync. AI delivers speed, scale, and data-driven precision, enabling it to analyze vast amounts of data quickly.

Writers control the creative direction, emotion, and instinct that turn those outputs into connections.

Writers have the final words.

When we combine all these factors, content moves from functional to memorable and from information to impact. That’s where the real value lives: in words that are not only seen, but felt.

AI may be the accelerator, but we, as writers, must be the navigators. Together, we build messages that travel faster, farther, resonate deeper, and sound unmistakably human.

That’s the future of writing, not human versus AI, but AI and me, creating more innovative and original digital content together.
